The Shish Mahal Restaurant is based in the town of Musselburgh, in East Lothian. Located on the coast of the Firth of Forth, Musselburgh is just 6 miles away from Edinburgh City Centre.
The town is commonly known as the "honest town", and this motto can be dated back almost 700 years. In 1332 the Regent of Scotland, Randolph, Earl of Moray, died in Musselburgh after a long illness, during which the citizens of the town cared for him. His successor offered the citizens a reward for their loyalty, but this was declined and the people merely stated they were only doing their duty.
Musselburgh Racecourse
Musselburgh has been host to horse racing, both flatracing and National Hunt meetings, since 1816. The 2km long course has a 9 hole golf course in the middle of it, which dates back to at least 1672 - the Musselburgh Golf Club was formed there in 1774.
On race days a road bridge over the Esk gives access to the course, however this is only on race days - the rest of the time the gates are kept closed.
